Create something.

Not sure if this counts as creating, though there's certainly creation involved...

Recently, a discussion with some Highlander fans on Facebook led me to realize that Sandra McDonald's classic Richie story, "Tough Guy," was not easily available online anywhere. As she and I happen to be FB friends, I reached out to her about sharing it. One thing led to another, and now Sandra's work will be moving to Ao3.

For anyone who cares about permissions and protocols, I want to make it clear that Sandra fully authorizes this account, chose the username, and has the password. However, she gave me permission to upload the stories on her behalf because I have them in digital form and I have the time.

The plan is to post her stories slowly, so as not to completely flood the tag. As I am not rereading them first (because if I did that, we'd be here for years), any information about characters/relationships, ratings, tags, and summaries is either coming from old notes, my memory, or any info that other people are sharing with me. Thanks are already due to several members of Cranky who have helped format the stories and supply additional information. Corrections are always welcome!

With that, I'm happy to say that "Tough Guy" is now back online!

Day #1 was to update stickies and other information. I've checked, and they're all as updated as they can be for the moment.

The persistent issue is that I rarely "do" fandom with any kind of fixed media to focus on. What are my current fandoms? You see the list of ones I've written in? Those. Those are my current fandoms. As are a bunch I've never written in, like Spider-Man. While I don't request the entire stable in every exchange, that's mostly from a failure to be able to generate prompts, and not loss of interest in the fandom. For lo, I am fickle.

Day #2 is to set goals for the year. Knowing that I probably won't keep them, here are a few:

  • Finish SCH

  • Comment of all of 2021's Shortcuts stories

  • Read 50 complete books. I managed 49 and ~1/2 of 4 others this year.

  • Keep my Masterlist updated

  • Write enough new stories that keeping my Masterlist updated is a concern. Let's say 12 new fics in at least 10 different fandoms?

  • Get a Bingo in h/c bingo this round

You know what? As uncomfortable as it is to talk about acts of kindness, sometimes it's also really nice to make them known. So, as an act of kindness to myself, I'm going to mention two that I did recently.

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

    1. Richie Ryan icons. I realized as I was typing up my tribute yesterday that I didn't have any, which is a damn shame.

    2. Cover art for my stories Something Called Justice and Impersonation. I've already received lovely art for the other two major stories in the series, and I'd love to have the whole series decked out.

    3. Recs for Spider-Man (Tom Holland) fic over 10K words long. I'm especially interested in gen and canon ships (though Peter/Harley is A-OK! and any age-appropriate ship is open to consideration if the rest of the story is good), h/c, whump, identity reveal. Strong spelling and grammar skills are a must, and I will backclick if the character is called Spiderman.

    4. Concrit on my stories. I told someone once to point out my errors and rub my nose in them; in retrospect, I think she took that entirely the wrong way. I can be stubborn and obstinate, but I'll come around eventually. Sometimes I just really do require being slapped upside the head with a fish before I see what's obvious to everyone else.

    5. My fan-friend subjunctivemood could use some money to help her pay off a bill before deferred interest kicks in and doubles the amount she owes. I've thrown a bit her way; maybe you can to? She's claimed to be able to pay everything back in a few months.

    ETA:

    6. People to actually participate in the prompt meme. I’ve had lots of reblogs, signal boosts, and people messaging me to say what a great idea it is, but almost no one has followed through on posting to it.

No, you haven't missed my posts for days 1-5. I'm only just jumping in with this one.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

As there's nothing I'm afraid to ask for, I'm going to choose to interpret this prompt as being simply a wishlist of things I need to ask for because I can't do them myself.

  • This is an old request, and though I don't do much with the fandom anymore, I'd still love to see it. For Teen Wolf, a Scott McCall character study vid done to the last ~40 seconds of "Peek-A-Boo" by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

  • Cover art for any of my stories, especially the longer ones, and even more especially the "Something Called" series. [personal profile] idelthoughts made me a fantastic one for "Something Called Honor" as part of wipbigbang, and I'd love to be able to be able to deck out all the stories in the series the same.

  • A Spider-Man: Homecoming rec list of stories over 10K. I'm a Spidey fan from way back, but I mostly don't dive into the fic because there's so much of it and I'm really not interested in Spidey porn or Reader Insert fic. However, there was a post going around Tumblr a couple weeks ago that made me curious about Spidey stories. This particular post imagined a scenario where everyone/other people in the school knows Peter's secret, but they all work to make sure he never knows they know. If there any any stories that play with this idea, I'm definitely interested, regardless of length.

  • A Highlander: the Series Watcher-based story. Not a Watcher-who-becomes-Immortal or a Watcher-gets involved-with-the-Game story, but something that focuses on the day-to-day issues of being a Watcher. How does someone structure their own life when their job is to clandestinely observe and record someone else's? How does someone deal with the traumas of what they have to observe (watching people fight and decapitate others can't be emotionally easy.)? How does someone have their own relationships when they have to keep so much secret? And how does someone live when their assignment dies?
  • argentum_ls: Matthew McCormick (Default)
In your own space, ask for help. Need a beta? Always wanted to learn how to make a vid? a fanmix? icons? In wanting to meet the challenge for Day 12, I did Day 14 in a couple of ways. First, I approached [livejournal.com profile] thefrozenheart about making a pimp post for Teen Wolf, which she graciously agreed to do (and did a wonderful job with, IMO).

In an unrelated conversation, I asked [livejournal.com profile] fountainxxpenny and [livejournal.com profile] cbassluv for help in compiling a Gen Fic list of Teen Wolf stories on FF.net, which they've graciously agreed to do.

While doing these, I realized that my current beloved fandom doesn't have a lot of resources for the newbie. We have season two coming up, and that's bound to bring in swarms of new people who are invariably going to be overwhelmed by what already exists. So, I'm asking for help in creating more resources for the beginners: episode transcripts, more lists of different kinds of fics, an icon archive or compilation, whatever will help get that person who has just wandered into fandom to keep from racing right back out in absolute confusion. If these resources can help prevent beginning mistakes and embarrassments, so much the better.

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Before I could do this challenge, I had to first go and ask someone to make some of this info. The fandom seems to be pretty self-contained, which is a shame since the show is so cool.

Let's start with a classic pimp post by [livejournal.com profile] thefrozenheart:

The pimp post doesn't talk much about the music. Teen Wolf is an MTV show and we all know what MTV used to stand for. Since the channel don't really air music videos anymore, they've moved to advertising the music in their shows. A compilation of the first season's selections is here:

    Unofficial Season 1 Soundtrack

Most of the fanfic for the show is slash and features the characters of Derek and Stiles. If this is to your taste, head over to AO3. If it's not, try the Gen Fic listing I'm working on compiling on FF.net.
    argentum_ls: Matthew McCormick (Default)
In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My favorite stories hit one of three tropes:

    1. Bearer of superpowers or supernatural ability has to out (in the sense of revealing that "Hey, I'm Spider-Man") him/herself to his/her family, friends, or enemies and deal with the consequences.

Story example: No Answer by [livejournal.com profile] fountainxxpenny

    2. Bearer of superpowers or supernatural ability gets put into some situation or circumstance that tests the limits of her/his super-state and/or tests her/his ability to not resort to the super-state (e.g. having to not turn into a werewolf when, under any other circumstances, that's what would be happening). Bring on the H/C.

Story example: Put the Hurt On by [livejournal.com profile] fountainxxpenny

    3. Person who either does or does not currently have a super-state acquires one, or the rules change on the existing one, and she/he has to cope with what all this means in a psychological and a pragmatic sense.

Story example: Just about every superhero origin story movie ever.

I've read everything the Teen Wolf fandom has to offer. Other fandoms I'd be interested in perusing these stories in are Highlander, The Tomorrow People, Big Wolf on Campus, My Secret Identity, The Listener, and possibly The Vampire Diaries (if we're talking Jeremy or pre-S3 Tyler). Please rec me some :)

    Full Day 2 information

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

There were a couple of vids I really want to rec here, but I can't find them online anymore and I don't have a lot of identifying information for them. If anyone happens to know how to find them, please share.

    Fandom: Highlander
    Media: Vid
    Song: "Blue Monday" by Orgy
    Featured Characters: Duncan and Methos
Reason for rec: While I'm not a Duncan fan, I loved the dynamic between Duncan and Methos that the fanvid creator brought out in this video. The vid, itself, was well crafted, and it's old enough that it might have been done with VCRs and creative use of a pause button (though I think it was too good for that).

    Fandom: Big Wolf on Campus
    Media: Vid
Song: I don't remember. The song title had the word hero in it, and might have been "Holding Out for Hero" or something similar.
    Featured Characters: Merton
Reason for rec: The vidder set up the idea that Merton was going to be the one in need of a hero (as he often was on the show), then subverted that and showed how he was the hero. Not only was a Merton-centric vid interesting, but highlighting the different roles he played was refreshing.

    Fandom: Teen Wolf (MTV)
    Media: Fanfic
    Title: No Answer
    Word Count: 17,867
    Author: [livejournal.com profile] fountainxxpenny
Summary: Sick of the weirdness, Melissa is determined to get an explanation from Scott.
Reason for rec: I've recced this story before and I'll rec it again, as often as I can. Not only does the author take on one of my favorite tropes (a supernatural character being outed to his/her family), but she really develops the characters' responses and reactions to the situation they find themselves in in a believable way. Furthermore, the viewpoint character is Scott's mother, so we get to see all the surprise and shock from inside her head.

    SNOWFLAKE CHALLENGE - DAY 1

    Full Day 1 Information

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

As a fanfic writer, I have a pretty decent range of what I'll attempt writing and I like to try new things. I enjoy playing outside my comfort zone, even if I'm not always impressed with the results. However, what defines me as a fanfic writer is probably a propensity for taking small moments in real life and examining them. That may be off-handed comments or common scenarios, or it may be Big Issues via the focus on a little piece of what it means to be dealing with that issue.

    Recs as follows:

    Title: Bright Spots
    Fandom: Do Over
Summary: Pat accidentally proves to Joel that the 80s had their good points.
    Word Count: 1959
Reason for rec: This is one of my most recent stories, written as a Yuletide treat. It's the only story in this fandom. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, especially because mostly all that happens is banter and the dropping of a lot of 80s pop culture references. I've never been good at writing banter, so a story that features it and works pleases me.

    Title: Proud of You
    Fandom: Teen Wolf (MTV)
Summary: Despite all that he's become, Scott is still searching for something he couldn't find as a human--his father's approval.
    Word Count: 7844
Notes: The story is woven around the middle episodes of season 1, starting sometime before "The Tell" and finishing the day after "Night School." Spoilers abound.
Reason for rec: On the show, Scott's father is mentioned twice, but he's never shown and we have no information about where he is or why he's not in the picture. I wanted to write a story that played with Scott's werewolf issues, but I wanted it against a framework of real life issues. I also wanted to examine Scott more as a person, so the story was also to intended to show the kind of person he might become, or might have become had it not been for the werewolf issues. I feel like I achieved all of these things.

    Title: Shadowed
    Fandom: Teen Wolf (MTV)
Summary: Scott learns more about the effects of the moon.
    Word Count: 938
Reason for rec: Again, this was to look at who Scott was when he wasn't being afflicted with werewolf issues. In this case, it was about charting his day as a "normal boy." I like the hopefullness of the piece.
