In your own space, ask for help. Need a beta? Always wanted to learn how to make a vid? a fanmix? icons? Maybe you’d want to have someone cheering for you while you work on an upcoming big bang or fannish bingo? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
In wanting to meet the challenge for Day 12, I did Day 14 in a couple of ways. First, I approached

In an unrelated conversation, I asked

While doing these, I realized that my current beloved fandom doesn't have a lot of resources for the newbie. We have season two coming up, and that's bound to bring in swarms of new people who are invariably going to be overwhelmed by what already exists. So, I'm asking for help in creating more resources for the beginners: episode transcripts, more lists of different kinds of fics, an icon archive or compilation, whatever will help get that person who has just wandered into fandom to keep from racing right back out in absolute confusion. If these resources can help prevent beginning mistakes and embarrassments, so much the better.

What do you mean by episode transcripts?
I've thought about ways to help new fans, but I've never really been part of a fandom before Teen Wolf, and sometimes I don't know what would be useful and what would be waste of time... To be honest I still don't think I'm part of the fandom, at least not the part the it matters, because this fandom is more about fanfics and I can't write, I'm not good at it. I'm good at fangirl, talk about the episodes and making graphics, but this don't seem to be interesting at all. I'm sorry I'm rambling...

Date: 2012-01-18 02:18 pm (UTC)If you've never been part of a fandom before, then you're the perfect person to offer ideas. What kinds of things would you like to see or have available to make your fan-life easier or more enjoyable?

Oh, honey. You're part of the fandom! Just by being on LJ and doing what you do, you're part of it. Fanfic is a big part, but it's not all there is.
Fandom is the whole world of people who love the source material, who want to talk about it, and who want to engage in it. We fanfic writers are nothing without readers. More importantly, the world cannot have too much art in it. You make amazing graphics. I can't do that.
Fandom needs all kinds of people. It needs artists, and writers, and squee-ers, and organizers. It needs people who can make screencaps and fanvids and icons just as much as it needs people who can write stories and poems. Do what you're good at, put it out there, and, by definition, you're part of fandom.
Edited to add: Sometimes I feel like I'm not a part of the fandom that matters either, because I don't write or read or squee over Derek/Stiles stories. Then I look at what I do do and the people I do touch and realize that fandom is a big place.

Date: 2012-01-18 03:42 pm (UTC)I mean, for me it would be very helpful because most of the times I can't stand wait for Portuguese subtitles to watch my shows, so I watch without, but sometimes the actors talk fast or use words I don't know. So for me, english subtitles or transcripts would be very helpful, but for what else it could be used?
Thank you for your lovely words dear, I guess you're right, the fandom needs all kinds of people. I just need to stop care about not being good enough :)
because I don't write or read or squee over Derek/Stiles stories
I know what you mean! I really do. You don't read Derek/Stiles fic at all? and have you never read it? why is that? (I'm just curious)

Date: 2012-01-18 06:55 pm (UTC)What can people use transcripts for?
All the things you listed. Episode transcripts are good for fans who aren't native speakers, for those who have hearing disabilities, and for those who simply aren't sure they heard the words correctly. They're also good for fact checking. Sometimes fan writers need to be sure that a dialogue exchange happened the way they remembered, or they want to know the exact wording, and they don't have access to episodes to rewatch them (or don't have time to rewatch).
You don't read Derek/Stiles fic at all? and have you never read it? why is that?
I've read nearly all of it. I've read nearly everything this fandom has written. I don't like the pairing. I cannot, in any way, see those two together. In canon they hate and distrust each other. Them suddenly realizing that they were meant to be together squicks me hard. I also feel that a lot of fanwriters don't do a good job writing either character, and I don't like reading fanfic where I can't recognize the characters.

Date: 2012-01-18 08:51 pm (UTC)I keep forgetting that most of the people don't need to download the episodes to watch.

That's why sometimes I think that all the slash fics, in this fandom, should be categorized as AU, because after all it's an alternative universe.
Thanks for answering me :)

Date: 2012-01-18 09:15 pm (UTC)I don't need to download them, but I do anyway. I like watching the episodes on my computer with headphones so that I can hear everything better. Even so, there are times when I'm writing that I want to know what someone said, but I don't want to go rewatch an episode to find out, especially if I can't remember where the conversation occurred in the episode. Transcripts would be useful there.

Heh. This is an old fanfic argument, about whether slash fic counts as canon-based or not. Personally, I have no issue with slashing characters, and I think that there's no reason slash to consider slash fiction as inherently AU. I'm quite fond of slash fic in general and am willing to suspend a lot of disbelief for good writing. It's slashing those two that bothers me.
Even in an AU, the characters should still be recognizably the characters from the show. Otherwise, one isn't writing fanfic. One is writing bad original fic. Only very rarely when I'm reading Derek/Stiles fic do I feel like I recognize the characters. Most of the time, I feel the authors are writing the characters they want the boys to be, not the ones they are. YMMV.

Date: 2012-01-18 09:40 pm (UTC)Honestly, I think that most of the time it's all about put two hot characters together, because to be honest I have read only a few fanfics with plot, not that I'm complaining, much :P
So, slashing like, Stiles/Jackson would be ok to you? I'm sorry for asking so much, it's just that I really like to know about people's opinion and I'm a big (huge) fan of slash ^_^

That's true!

slashing like, Stiles/Jackson would be ok to you?
In theory. I don't immediately buy them together, but I can see situations where they could be.
I'm sorry for asking so much
Don't be! I'm happy to talk about all things fic related.
::go google what YMMV means::
It literally means Your Mileage May Vary, which is a notice put in car advertisements. It figuratively means that the results I get and the results you get may not be the same. Or, to put it more simply: I don't like Derek/Stiles. I don't expect you to agree with me or my reasons. You have your reasons for liking them, and those are valid too.

That's the kind of answer I love, you are willing to give it a try and I think that's very important, not only in fanfiction matters.
I do respect and agree with your opinions about this pairing, and my reasons to love them are really, really shallow, no shame. (ok maybe a little bit) ^_^

Date: 2012-01-18 10:16 pm (UTC):) I don't 'ship. I'm interested in characters, not 'ships. So, in theory, I'm open to any 'ship. Right now, I really like the Scott/Jackson stories that have been popping up. I'd also really like someone to take on Melissa/Coach (Why? I don't know. I think they'd be terrible together.)

I agree. They would be terrible together, and also very funny. Did you made a prompt somewhere?
