Commit an act of kindness

You know what? As uncomfortable as it is to talk about acts of kindness, sometimes it's also really nice to make them known. So, as an act of kindness to myself, I'm going to mention two that I did recently.

My teenage daughter has a wonderful group of friends, and as Christmas approached she started talking about what presents she wanted to get them. None of them have jobs (too young) so any presents purchased would be out of my pocket. Whatever. As I said, they're wonderful, and it's not like anything was going to cost much. Two weeks before Christmas she texted me to tell me that the parent of one friend required emergency surgery--the expense of which was going to effectively cancel their Christmas. She wanted to know what to do. Together, we made a plan.

And on Christmas day, she went around to her friend's house with presents for him and each of his younger siblings that she explained Santa had mistakenly delivered to our place. These were real gifts--things the kids needed--not the kinds of knick-knacky things teens give each other, and it turned out they were the only gifts the kids had to open.

As mentioned in a previous post, my fan-friend [tumblr.com profile] subjunctivemood needed some money to help her pay off a bill before it doubled in size. I threw a few bucks her way.

You helped save Christmas?! Yay! [I actually teared up and flailed a bit reading that. You and your daughter are awesome! <3]
