Meme: Fanfiction History

First TV show I had self-insertion fantasies about:
The Tomorrow People 1973. From the moment I saw the show, it was all I could think about. Naturally, I wanted to be part of it.
First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans:
I don't remember for sure, but I think it was Forever Knight. Prior to that, I'd been heavily involved in various message boards all over the newly accessible World Wide Web where I'd talked about TV shows, read fanfic, etc. But, FK was the first show where I recognized that what I was participating in was a unique and defined thing.
Pairing in the first slash fanfiction I read:
Probably LaCroix/Nicholas for FK. I read everything posted to the FK Listserv, regardless of what characters were in it or who wrote it.
First RPS/RPF I read:
I'm not sure I've ever read RPS/RPF. The whole concept squicks me something fierce.
First fanfiction I read that made me think, YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write...
Since I read so much, it all blurs together. The one that most stands out was The Witness by Michele Martin. I was so in awe of the crossover format that I immediately set out to write my own in what would be my first conscious fanfic attempt. It was a colossal failure.
Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote:
I've never been into shipping or pairings. The characters in the first fanfic I wrote were Quinn Mallory (Sliders), Richie Ryan (Highlander), Adam Newman (Tomorrow People 1992), and at least one poorly developed OC.
The first pairing I ever wrote would have been Basics, the Allison/Scott story I wrote for a kink meme fill in Teen Wolf less than a year ago.
First OTP:
Wow, is this a biased and limited meme. It sure is revealing a lot of assumptions about what fandom is and is supposed to be.
I don't have any OTPs and never have. I generally like what canon gives me and will acknowledge those relationships in my stories, but I'm done with them when canon is. In those cases where I'm in the mood for a non-canonical relationship, then which one depends on what mood I'm in and whether or not I can see those characters together.
First RPS/F OTP:
None, and not gonna start.
First fannish friend I met in person.
Again, I'm not sure. I've met a lot of fannish friends over the years, and I have a couple of friends now with whom I was in fandom, but I can't recall the order. Did we meet in fandom or did they get into fandom because we knew each other? Certainly one of the earliest fannish friends I've met is
tptigger in the mid-to-late '90s.
First character I formally roleplayed:
Uh. What?

Date: 2012-02-27 12:38 am (UTC)This is what I was much more obliquely talking about. It's inexcusable.

Date: 2012-02-26 04:04 pm (UTC)To be fair, my characterization of how the term OTP is used, is pretty darn biased. Lots of folks in contemporary fandom do use it as I described, but there are plenty of other folks who just use it to mean "This is my favorite pairing. Other pairings are fine, but this is the one that makes me happiest."

Date: 2012-02-26 04:57 pm (UTC)The fandom I'm in now seems to be using OTP in the more exclusionary sense. I've seen the acronym used in a lot of different ways, as you described. Regardless, it's not my thing. I like characters. And I definitely latch on to specific characters to the exclusion of others, but I don't usually give a rip about whom they're paired with as long as everyone's written in character. :)

Date: 2012-02-27 12:03 am (UTC)I understand though. Roleplaying and real person fiction has always been such a strange thing to me.
I think I've subconsciously had that pairing I've rooted for in shows since I was a kid, even if I didn't know it. I mean, still remember wanting Kim and Tommy from Power Rangers to get together.
How are you though.. you haven't been updating much.

I was doing great keeping up with the updates to "Measure," which was pretty all-consuming, until about a week ago. Getting the next part written has been keeping me busy. Also, work. And trying to figure out my next stories.
How've you been?

Date: 2012-02-27 12:43 am (UTC)My writing has gone to hell too. Haven't touched my stories in ages.
It's going to take a while or a miracle before I'm settled again I'm thinking.
Yeah I noticed you hadn't added any more chapters, figured you'd reached a bit of a block or something.

Mostly "or something." I used up all the material I had pre-written and couldn't stay on top of my own schedule for writing new material. Plus, endings all give me hell. I've got about 1200 words of the next bit written, but it's really rough.
