More than a year after writing it, we've finally reached the point in our schedule where I can start posting my next Matthew story, Fish or Cut Bait.

Title: Fish or Cut Bait
Summary: A new case with a personal connection to Diana Chase takes the team to a town Matthew called home a century ago. There, with Diana closely involved in the investigation, he must also determine how Talbot's newfound knowledge of his Immortality will affect their partnership and his position within the FBI.
Rating: G for now. Probably up to a T later.
Word Count: ~43,000 (when complete)
Tags: Casefic, Canon Typical Violence, Other Additional Tags to be Added

I'm ridiculously excited about this story, in part because of how long it's been waiting. I hope you all enjoy it too.

It seems that I've been very negligent in posting about the stories for Highlander: the Agent.

Over the last year, we have been very busy and have managed to maintain a regular weekly posting. There's a lot to include here. All of these were written by [personal profile] teratornis. But, don't worry, I have some stuff coming up.

Episode #3

People Like Us - 30,641 words - While investigating a string of murders in Louisiana, Matthew gets an unexpected opportunity to reconcile some more of the mistakes of his own past.

Extra

Call and Response - 2450 words - Matthew's encounter with Read more... ) in Louisiana left him with some unanswered questions. He thinks he knows where he might find the information he needs.

Episode #4

Interference - 27,311 words - Matthew and Talbot take on a case investigating a serial killer whose victims were all carrying swords at the times of their deaths. It should be the kind of case they're well prepared to handle, until an unexpected encounter proves just how dangerous this killer can be, even to an Immortal.

Extra

Conversations - 7000 words - In the wake of his abduction and subsequent rescue, Matthew has a needed but difficult conversation with Sam, and one with Talbot.

Episode #5

Come to Light - 31,758 words - A killer Matthew failed to stop decades ago resurfaces, and his secrecy regarding the depths of his connection to the investigation threatens his partnership with Talbot.

Extra

Equilibrium - WIP, part 1 of 2 posted - After witnessing Read more... ), Talbot takes some time away to come to terms with what she's learned.

Episode #6

Small Town Mentality - WIP, part 1 of 8 posted - With Talbot on leave, Matthew travels on his own to assist with a months-old serial case in a small, insular town. As he digs deeper and the murderer accelerates, he's forced to confront his assumptions about who is a friend, and who is a foe.

In the early days of the bantering and brainstorming that would become Highlander: the Agent, Tornis had given in to the pull of the muses and started writing scenes from a casefic. As much fun as it was to have near-daily additions to the story to look forward to, I started to feel guilty about not contributing anything of my own. In order to ease myself into the characters, I decided to write a story capitalizing on one of the recurring jokes we'd developed.

The cat )

As all Highlander backstories need the Reveal Scene, that's also what I wanted to do: The one where we get to see how the family dealt with the news and what put the first pieces into place that would lead to the Matthew that we met in "Manhunt."

From here to 'Manhunt' )

And thus was born:

Title: Reconcilable Differences
Word Count: 8750
Characters: Matthew, Original Characters, Corwin the Cat
Rating: T (I think there's a swear)
Summary: The year is 1989, and Matthew has been happily married for almost two decades. Recognizing that his lack-of-aging is catching up to this life, he realizes it's time to have the talk with his family.

This also marks the first of the extras that I wrote, and the first one posted on our new schedule of releasing extras on Wednesdays.

In Dead End, we get the first historical flashbacks of the series. These flashbacks were written, in part, to provide backstory for Matthew, but also, in Highlander tradition, to provide thematic parallels with the present-time events of the story. To write these flashbacks, we had to grab and pull onto a lot of threads that the canon (and canon-adjacent material) left dangling.

Our Highlander spin-off series continues this week with the start of the second "episode":

Dead End

Summary: While investigating a gruesome case in a tiny Midwestern town, Matthew must contend with unexpected challenges both from the attitudes of the locals, and from his own unquiet memories.

This one is 9 chapters and ~35K total, with one chapter posting weekly.

We also posted the first "extra" last week, a one-shot:

First Case

Summary: Matthew's first case with his new partner doesn't exactly go as anyone hoped, and his own investigations lead to an encounter with an old acquaintance.
Characters: Matthew, Duncan MacLeod, Thomas Powell, Francesca Talbot (OC)
Word Count: 4500

After over a year of conversation, work, editing, and somehow (mostly) managing to keep our mouths shut about what we were doing, [personal profile] teratornis and I have finally been able to start posting the first story in our Matthew McCormick ("Manhunt," season 5, episode 3) spin-off fic universe:

Highlander: The Agent

The first story is by teratornis and now has 3 of the 7 chapters posted, with a new one posting every Saturday is complete with 7 chapters and an epilogue.

Title: Close to Home
Summary: Matthew McCormick's position in the FBI faces a threat when a serial killer he and his partner, Francesca Talbot, are investigating learns too much.

The current plan is to alternate between "episodes" and "extras." After "Close to Home," there will be a standalone fic featuring Matthew and Talbot's first case together, and then my first episode, "Dead End."

Come check it out!

Sometimes, an idea rears up and needs to be written. Sometimes that idea then takes over your life.

Following last year's Shortcuts, I started talking to [personal profile] teratornis about various things Highlander. In those discussions, the subject came up of Matthew McCormick and the proposed spin-off featuring him as an Immortal FBI Agent who travels the country "investigating" beheadings.

I don't know why this spin-off didn't happen, though McCormack landing the part on Will & Grace probably had something to do with it. (And, good for him! That was a much better choice in the ::cough:: long term.)

But, fanfic, you know?

While considering the spinoff-that-never-was, Tornis and I bantered ideas for what we would have liked to see. We discussed possibilities, many of which were little more than Cool Dialogue Exchanges. They wrote a scene pulling some of those ideas together, then that scene turned into a full-blown story.

We are now ... invested.

Oh, god, are we invested.

This has been/is being such a fun experience. I'm also really looking forward to the day when we can start sharing. The impatience is real.
argentum_ls: Methos (Methos)
Title: Troll the Ancient
Rating: PG
Characters: Cory Raines, Ceirdwyn, Matthew McCormick
Word Count: 3150
Summary: To celebrate Christmas, Cory has planned a specific heist for which he's going to need some very old help.
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] eliyes on the occasion of [livejournal.com profile] hlh_shortcuts, based on a prompt for a Cory Raines centric-story.
