And so we end the year with a surge of word count that washed away most of the deficit from the rest of the year.

trick or treat exchange

I dropped the ball on this exchange, then managed to at least make it bounce. For [community profile] trickortreatex I was matched with [personal profile] lionessvalenti on one of those multiple-fandom matches where I had my pick of several possible shows and character matches. After waffling through a few choices, I settled on Teen Wolf because it wouldn't require any canon review. The character request was for Deputy Jordan Parrish, and the pairings requests included Jordan/Chris Argent and Jordan/Lydia Martin. Because polyamory and open relationships were both on the allowed list, I decided to go for it and incorporate both. The story was slow going, mostly because writing was happening in the rare blank spaces around a semester schedule that was taking up way more time than it should have. Like usual, I came up to the deadline on writing it. Unlike usual, I completely missed the deadline and accidentally defaulted. I decided to finish the story and post it anyway, thinking that worst case scenario, she'd end up with several gifts--which is what happened. This story was my first deliberate attempt at writing body horror, so figuring out whether I was describing too little or too much was always a mind-bender. Jordan on the show has some kind of fire immunity, an idea I wanted to play with by itself. Fandom-theory is that he's a phoenix. While I'm not generally into following along with fandom theories, I've never played with Phoenix ideas. So I decided to play with that, too, and combine it with the idea of him self-immolating as a protective measure. The presentation in the story is ambiguous enough to allow for the Phoenix interpretation or for any of several others, including a comment I just received pointing out that he burns up every time he gets too turned on, which wasn't my goal, though I do enjoy when others point out patterns I didn't intend.

The final story was: Burning Up Inside, 1385 words, PG-13.

intoabar

Last year when I did this challenge, I had a clear idea of both which character I wanted to have walk into the bar and which potential fandoms he could meet on the other end. By sheer happenstance, I received a match that worked perfectly for a story I already wanted to tell. This year, I had no idea about either characters or fandoms. None of my friends offered up suggestions when I asked, so I finally decided to play it safe and throw out a character whom I've at least written a lot about: Scott McCall, from Teen Wolf. The fandom potentials were pulled from my Yuletide lineup...and I ended up receiving a head-scratcher. Scott McCall (who is underaged) walks into a bar and meets Dr. Benjamin Jeffcoate from My Secret Identity, a show that ended its run in 1992. Scott's in California and Dr. J, when last we saw him, was in Toronto-ish, USA (you know, that ambiguous American mid-western city that looks an awful lot like Toronto). What would bring the two into the same bar? Ever? What would they possibly have to talk about? Why would a 17 year old boy talk to a fifty-something man who's also a complete stranger? I finally decided to bring Dr. J out to California and to go with a truck stop rather than a bar, but I still had no idea about the story itself. NaNoWriMo was in full swing by this time, though, so I just started to write--and amazingly, a story appeared. Characters I hadn't planned on began to populate the story and then things started to happen and people reacted...and it all sort of made sense. There's nothing original in the story, which turned out to be the the punchline and the basis for the title, but, as always, figuring out how to cross over the two shows was an enjoyable challenge...

...that resulted in: Just Another Full Moon, 3935 words, G.

hlh_shortcuts and yuletide pending.
