Sunshine Challenge Day 4

A little out-of-order here:
sunshine_challenge day 4 was to list fanwork recommendations.
To my own surprise, I typically don't read that much fanfic, which makes rec compilations difficult. The number of "Marked for Later" stories is intense. The number that's been sitting there for years is just scary. (I'm also a very slow reader, so what might take someone else an hour to get through takes me days ... or longer.)
That said, my primary fandom of the summer appears to have been watching the box office returns on Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. I've also spent the last month buried in Spider-Man fic. And that means I do have some recs!
1. spilt truth and smudged lies (at last until the inkwell runs dry) by SmilinStar - 86,919 words.
I'm not an AU person. If I'm going to read fanfic, I want to read about the characters I know, so this was a risk. It was totally worth it. While it is an AU, it's more like the Homecoming characters are aged-up. There are some necessary differences in how characters know each other and what their relationships are to one another, but that's mostly window-dressing. Overall, the characterization is excellent and the plot is everything I love in Spider-Man.
2. Affinity War - by ForASecondThereWedWon - 102,067 words.
To no one's surprise, there's a subset of Spider-Man fanfic set post-Infinity War in which everyone lives. This is very much a Peter Parker/Michelle Jones story with a considerable amount of porn (that's easy enough to skip, if you're so inclined). There's also a lot of humor and, of course, a much happier take on IW and its after effects. Also, whump. So much whump.
3. these secrets will keep (here in the dark) by SmilinStar - 22,709 words.
A trope I didn't realize I was as into as I am: the civilian identity gets kidnapped in order to draw the superhero out to save his "friend." It also requires the trapped characters to actually talk and confess all their pent up thoughts. And whump. But, I'm always here for the whump.
4. turn back the clock (and I'll try again in the morning) by madasthesea - 35,026 words.
Time loops and identity reveals? What's not to love?
If you have any other Spidey recs, let me hear them!

“I have no idea,” he says, before lowering his voice because he’s still not convinced she’s not listening in on their conversations. The fear is well founded, alright? He swears she looks at him sometimes – with that quirked eyebrow, and penetrating gaze – as if she knows his every secret. And he has secrets. One big, red and blue, spandex covered, web-slinging, secret that no one can find out about. “Who knows anything about Jones?”
And it’s a legitimate question.
He knows next to nothing about their colleague.
Apart from the fact she’s damn good at her job, is incapable of uttering a sentence that isn’t dripping in sarcasm, is a little (a whole lot) intimidating, he knows nothing about Michelle Jones.
Not for lack of trying though.
AKA: the Spideychelle Journalist AU I couldn't stop myself from writing . . .

Defeating Thanos was the biggest challenge of Peter's life.
...Until he realized he wanted to date MJ.

MJ’s lips twitch and thank god, he can’t see her right now.
Because this is not supposed to be funny. This is supposed to be terrifying.
After all, it’s not every day you get kidnapped to lure out a superhero.
A superhero who happens to be your best friend, your inconvenient crush, one hundred percent pure, oblivious, dumb boy, and also happens to be kidnapped along with you too.
Yep.
Best get settled in – it’s gonna be a long night
Or: Kidnapped and tied together, Peter and MJ play a little game of ‘Truth and Truth.’

Peter gets stuck in a time loop. In it, he lives through some of his worst nightmares, only to wake up that morning and have no one remember. He needs Tony to help him get through.
And if that isn't bad enough, his identity is revealed over and over, every day.
Time loops and identity reveals? What's not to love?

Date: 2019-07-27 07:26 pm (UTC)I'm very reassured that this isn't just me. I'm voting for there not to be a rec-prompt next year because I feel so overwhelmed by them. I don't need any more recs, I need time to read the things that were recommended to me two years ago that I still haven't gotten around to.
I always knew I was a bit of a slow reader, but I didn't realize how much slower until the last Harry Potter book hit the bookstores. A bunch of my friends went to a premiere book sale (I can't recall if I was too lazy to go or if I had volunteered to be the adult who stayed home with their kids), but they came back and we had a house full of people all quietly reading the book as quickly as they could and even though everyone started at once, three our four people had already finished when I was still several chapters from the end, so they went out for a food run so they could squee about it in the car without spoiling anyone. And another friend started late for some reason and yet was nearly caught up to me when I finally finished it. And Harry Potter books aren't even a heavy read in terms of language and grammar. I'm just… distractable. The only reason I was even able to finish the book as quickly as I did was because so many people were desperate for me to finish so they could discuss it without spoiling anyone. (And honestly I didn't enjoy it much or remember much about it, partly because I was pushing myself to read it so quickly.) I like to be able to read a few pages and stop and think about it, y'know? I'm not dumb, but sometimes my brain is just slow and I need a little extra time to assimilate new information before I'm ready for more.
I still haven't seen Far From Home, but it's on my list. I hadn't even been enthusiastic about seeing Homecoming because I viewed it as "yet another Spiderman reboot". But then I feel in love with Tom Holland's portrayal in Infinity War and went back to watch Homecoming and he's so perfect.
Re: Spiderman
Date: 2019-07-29 03:40 am (UTC)Same here! I'm starting to think my primary fandom may be collecting fic recs that I'll never be able to read.
The thing is: I have a lot of time to read. I'm just really flighty. At any given point, I'll have upwards of 10 books I'm working on. I also read as a major component of my primary profession. So, the fanfic tabs simply accumulate with all the best intentions behind them.
I like to be able to read a few pages and stop and think about it, y'know?
Yeah, and this. I'm only good for a few pages/screens at a time, and then I'm off checking other tabs while I mull over what I've read.
But then I feel in love with Tom Holland's portrayal in Infinity War and went back to watch Homecoming and he's so perfect.
As a rule, if it's Spider-Man, I will love it. However, Holland's Spidey is by far my favorite, and this new movie is also by far my favorite. It's OK if you haven't seen it. I'm at 5 times now, so I've got you covered :)
BTW, I love that icon!
Re: Spiderman
Date: 2019-07-29 04:22 am (UTC)Ditto. I have no excuses timewise and yet I've got a library book due back tomorrow that' I've only read a quarter of and I'm really curious about how the book ends, but I still can't stay focused on it long enough to finish. So either there will be a marathon reading session tomorrow (too tired tonight) or I'm going to have to check it out again later. (There's a waiting list so I can't just extend my checkout time on it.)
I walked out of Into the Spider-Verse knowing that I needed the dancing-Spiderman gif as an icon. And that was a problem because Dreamwidth has a maximum file size of 60kb. That's never a problem for static icons, but it's sometimes tricky to get an animated icon to fit under 60kb. So I just kept deleting frames until I'd edited it down to fit. Slightly sad that I couldn't squeeze in the whole dance routine, but this seemed like a good representative loop.
If you would like it, feel free. All I did was steal the old viral gif and make it fit.
Sounds like I'm going to have to make an effort to see the new movie. ♥
