Meme: First Lines

See if there are any patterns yourself, or have other people say what they notice.
1. The hardest lesson to learn was not how to keep one's word, but when it was permissible not to.

2. Richie yanked open his front door, sword in hand and a biting demand on his lips.
-Truth Will Out
3. “Excusez-moi.” Methos caught the attention of the man who’d sidled out of the row of chairs ahead of him and held out the wallet he’d lifted earlier.

4. Somewhere between the grocery store and the dry cleaners, Methos picked up a tail.
-Highlander: the Game
5. God damn it, James. What have you done?
-Open Wounds
6. All it took to break a Machine was a drop of Immortal blood.

7. The best way to avoid a murder charge was to die.

8. On the one hand, Immortality had given Richie the ability to pursue much more interesting goals than he'd had as an orphan brat getting shuttled from foster home to foster home.

9. “Never have I ever...been a god.”
-Never Ever
10. To have a successful relationship, some rules needed to be repeatedly and overtly enforced.
-Theory and Practice
#s 1-9 are all Highlander. #10 is Leverage. Clearly, I need to work on being more poly-fannish.
#s 1 and 8 are the only stories here not written directly for an exchange. Gotta work on more free range writing, too.
Not sure about trends in the openings themselves.
