This calendar is done to the best of my observational ability. Errors and oversights will gladly be corrected. However, I'm not the one who thinks that the full moon actually occurs once a month.

This is still very much a work-in-progress.

SPOILERS AHOY!

ETA: Full moons in the TW-verse are apparently arbitrary.

Brilliant work! I found you via kind of a long Google search. I've never seen a show with such a crazed, compressed timeline as TW--makes it hard to write canon-based fic.

So thank you for this great resource!

You're very welcome. :)

Yes, it's very hard to write canon-based fic with this calendar. The solution appears to be to ignore the calendar for those kinds of fics where when, specifically, it occurs isn't all that important.

I'm despairing of how to update season 2. There's a canon date that screws up everything so very hard that I may end up having to ignore it.

Oh, I would love to know more! What is this canon date?

I don't mean to throw my homework on you, a kind and total stranger! It's just that I've been watching and rewatching and taking notes and reading fic, and...gah! I'll take any help I can get.

That said, I agree: I can't be the only fan struggling with this issue; deciding "to hell with it" and hooking what I want to write on the bits of canon that fit it is probably a valid strategy.

What is this canon date?

In S2 episode 10 (?) when we get the massive flashback to Matt sitting in the car outside Jackson's house, Matt's phone says that it's April 28th. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that early S2 is occurring at the end of April, especially since there's lots of intratextual support that it's still late Februrary/early March.

deciding "to hell with it" and hooking what I want to write on the bits of canon that fit it is probably a valid strategy.

I think that, unless it's important to the story, it's best not to even deal with the calendar. To the extent that the reader needs to know what knowledge people have, the calendar can be used as a backdrop, e.g. "Story occurs after 'Lunatic'" or "Story occurs before Lydia's birthday." Really, though, canon-based AUs pretty much have to be the main thing. The only story I've seen where the calendar mattered is the one that spurred its creation to begin with: Proud of You. Everything else merely transplants the characters to, what a previous poster called, Calenderless Town.

And, hey, I'm all about talking fic, so have no fear about pushing your homework on me :)

Oh my gosh, I've just had a look at your oeuvre on AO3, and I'm kind of humbled! I just transferred your whole Works page to my tablet. I'll be reading for a while. :D

The story whose engine I desperately hope will turn over if I just crank the key in the ignition enough times takes place starting immediately post S2. That should be easy enough, but damned if I can figure out how much time passes between the end of 2.11 and the end of 2.12. In particularly I'm having trouble constructing a timeline between Jackson's apotheosis (it's really hard to think of that moment any other way!), the morning where Isaac, Peter and Derek find the Alpha gang tag on the door of Hale ex-house, and Scott and Stiles pretending normalcy on the lacrosse field.

But you know, it's entirely possible that I'm overthinking. It's a terrible habit and a block-inducer.

Oh, and I meant to say, re the April 28 canon date, that I think Davis and Co might have wanted to push the action closer to summer break. Davis has said that he proposes to keep the same kind of compressed timeline going in S3, but it wouldn't surprise me if he wanted to accommodate things like changes in the actors' appearance or style (it is MTV after all), and needed "summer vacation" to account for them.

And from a strictly storytelling perspective, there are lots of juicy possibilities in starting a new season "One Year Later" (or whatever).

And also? Wow, I'm impressed that you've picked up on the little visual cues like that date showing on a phone. I'm still at the stage where I'm watching the action--though along about 4th re-watch, I do start to catch background details.

that I think Davis and Co might have wanted to push the action closer to summer break.

It's possible, though since I heard that they're planning to skip summer break, I can't see any reason to push the action closer to it.

At any rate, that April 28th date literally makes nonsense of pretty much everything that happens. I may have to handwave it under the idea that Matt wasn't exactly in his right mind.

there are lots of juicy possibilities in starting a new season "One Year Later" (or whatever).

Very true. Though, the whole "the Alpha Pack is here now" thing becomes silly if we pick up with the kids after an uneventful summer. The Alpha Pack is here now, and they decided to concentrate on their gardening until after Labor Day.

you've picked up on the little visual cues like that date showing on a phone.

That's the kind of thing I watch for. It's a terrible habit because I'm all about those kinds of details. I generally watch episodes dozens of times just to look for that kind of stuff.

Have fun reading my fic. I hope you enjoy :) And good luck with yours. If it's not Derek/Stiles, I very much look forward to reading it. (Sorry, I can't stand that pairing).

Do you think they disregarded real Full moon dates? Because your calendar inconsistent with the 2011 full moon calendar.

I think the entire real 2011 calendar was completely disregarded.

Considering that the pilot was written at least a year earlier, that doesn't surprise me.

Plus, a lot of writers don't pay attention to real calendars since they assume that no one's going to pay attention to whether Wednesday was really February 7th or not.

I back-engineered the calendar here based on the canonical evidence only. It's far, far less brain-breaking than trying to make the show work on the real calendar.

So, Season 2 doesn't end in April? I know it's a work in progress here, so I don't know if you've gotten that far. April had been my estimate but I haven't extensively researched it yet.

I kind of gave up (lack of time) on updating the calendar with "Ice Pick," so I'm not sure how long the season lasts. At a guess, I'd say it ends in early May. There's some real messiness with the dates that are complicating my urge to sit down and try to unravel them.

Date: 2013-04-13 07:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] grahamburgers.livejournal.com
I can completely understand that -- especially when some episodes last a day, some episodes last a week, and there's no real transition or dialogue to clue us in to how much time has passed. It's super nit-picky, I think, but if I had to pick the biggest flaw in the show I'd say it's that. :P

I'm working on a Buffy crossover with TW (the idea being that both take place at Sunnydale High) and trying to coordinate the plots and episodes with any sort of calendar.... oof! Buffy's a little better with the chronology clues because they drop these little hints -- like in the third episode, Buffy says "It's been two weeks since I've seen a vampire" so you know it's been at least two weeks since the second episode ended. But still, I have no idea what to do with so much in between time especially when I don't know how much time there is. :P

Date: 2013-04-15 04:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] argentum-ls.livejournal.com
The problem isn't a lack of time markers, because there are a surprising number of those; the problem is that the time markers often don't make sense. For example, there are far too many full moons in season 2.

As for your fusion, are you setting Buffy in 2011 or Teen Wolf in 1996? I'm curious how you're going to reconcile the decade difference.

Date: 2013-04-29 08:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] grahamburgers.livejournal.com
Yeah, as I've been going through each episode, I'm getting that. I think there's got to be like... entire days where *nothing* happens and we don't see at all, it's the only way I can make any sense of things. And I think perhaps some of the times when we're cutting back and forth between two scenes, they may not be happening at the same time. It's the only way I can make sense of things. :P

I'm updating Buffy, because I'm really really much more familiar with that series so I think it will be easier for me to tweak things where I need to. Plus, any pop culture references I might use will be easier for me to remember if they're newer. :P

Hi. I've been working on a calendar schedule for Teen Wolf in general (Season 2 in particular), and I was wondering if you'd be okay with me using the calendar you put together for Season 1 to construct a visual timeline of both seasons. I'd credit, of course, and link back to this page for people who are interested in the details. I think I've worked out as accurate a calendar for Season 2 as I can, and I'd like to post it along with the visual timeline and a link to your page on my LJ and my tumblr (my username there is also zynnser).

I'm also curious about why you chose to include February 29, since this (supposedly) takes place in 2011, which isn't a leap year. I'm well aware that the Teen Wolf timeline is full of discrepancies, so I didn't know if it was a deliberate choice or not.

Date: 2013-05-22 03:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] argentum-ls.livejournal.com
Sure! Go ahead. Thanks for asking :) I'm interested in seeing what you came up with. I found season 2 to be such a mess that I haven't been able to summon the mental power to deal with it.

I'm also curious about why you chose to include February 29...

::sighs:: That would be one of those 'errors and oversights' that I'm more than happy to correct. I think it was a brain-fart from assembling the calendar in 2012, which had a leap-year.

Thank you! Season 2 is a mess, especially Ice Pick. I think I made some sense out of it, although I'm pretty sure someone else could do a timeline and have it turn out totally different but be just as based in canon. I've posted to my LJ (http://zynnser.livejournal.com/832.html) and my tumblr (http://zynnser.tumblr.com/post/51053771554/teen-wolf-season-2-timeline) if you're interested in looking it over.
