Viewing: The original 1940 film Gaslight has been uploaded to YouTube so I watched that this week. It would have been better with a more subtle and charismatic actor playing the husband, because he was too villainous even when he was supposed to be persuasive. However, the core concept was very frightening to watch, and lent the film greater suspense than I expected.

Meanwhile, it took until Series Eight, which has a weak reputation, for me to get the version of Doctor Who I always secretly wanted, with the towering toxicity of a Doctor/companion dynamic on overdrive. Twelve and Clara are insane about each other, and every second is riveting. I am eager to see how it all shakes out and am enjoying Capaldi's Doctor so much. The Doctor being older just works so well for me. It's like the story has finally clicked for me. This is also the first time in watching where I have felt really keen to go back and check out the classic run to get all the lore that feeds into this.

Cooking: I have a lot of random ingredients in my pantry, so as I reorganized everything I have decided to select one item at a time and figure out what to use it in. So one randomly regifted cup of red rice got made into Cajun red rice. Honestly, I see no meaningful difference between red and brown rice, so that part was a little whatever, but the dish was tasty.

Reading: I was in an antique shop this week which had old paperbacks for 50 cents each, and I scooped up a few. I'm extremely done with literary fiction for the moment, as every damn one published seems to require a downer ending to prove its worthiness or something. So I grabbed two pulpy romantic suspense (also called gothic) novels, one Inspector Finch mystery (which is apparently gothic-adjacent), one historical novel by Daphne Du Maurier (The Glass-Blowers) and two works of science fiction (2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke and Dragonsdawn by Anne McCaffrey).

I read Dragonflight when I was about fourteen, and was so impressed by the time travel portion that I forgave it all else. I also never read another Pern novel because I didn't want to spoil the effect with subpar sequels (I was very nervous about sequels growing up, which I think carried forward into my enjoyment of cancelled TV - you can't screw up the ending if there isn't one). I have no idea if it would hold up.

But at least I have a stack of books which might qualify as escapist in some way or another.

Busy day at my parents' house today. I tried a new recipe on them and it was a hit.I also made them ham, sauteed asparagus and corn. I always try to give them lots of veggies.

I did a lot of little jobs (changing light bulbs, cleaning, packing up things they want to donate, etc.) and then I also cut down 4 biggish trash trees, chopped them up, and put them in the green waste bin.

Just to keep my motivation somewhat high, writing wise:

The last chapter of In Abeyance had eight scenes left to finish this morning. It is now down to seven.*

The next chapter of Sidelined feels overlong, so I think I will split it at a logical point I found. If so, that only has six scenes left to do.

*Edit: Down to six! Thank you, cheerleaders!

[community profile] saturdaymorningex — the fanfiction exchange for cartoons/animations in TV, movies, OVAs, and webseries — continues its nominations until Friday, April 18. Here's the approved tagset so far.

Anyone may nominate up to 10 fandoms, with up to 10 solo characters or character relationships. Nominations aren't a promise to play.

I'm strongly hoping to receive a Dungeons and Dragons (Cartoon, 1983) match, of course. No one has yet added ship nominations to the 10 gen nominations I submitted, so I'm afraid that's a poor sign for the odds of other folks being interested in D&DC this year, but we shall see.

Does anyone know what this character is?

It's not a full stop! It breaks html that needs a full stop.

Also, how did I end up using it? I must have accidentally copied it? From somewhere?

Blake Lively v. Justin Baldoni:
I'd be depressed about Depp v. Heard repeating itself, except Lively isn't stuck with bargain basement lawyers, so it's going rather better for her. (Okay, so, "whoever has the most expensive lawyers wins" is a terrible system, but it's at least mildly satisfying when the person you want to win has the most expensive lawyers and the better case.) I've been spending probably too much time following this because I want the win. Not that invested in the actors, but am invested in harassment-free workplaces. Read more... )

Title's a bit clickbaity, this summary is better: The show deals with topics like the manosphere, red pill, incels, and the coded language teenagers use to communicate ideas around the topics. This set reminded me of my own struggles as a young man and how things could have gone very differently for me. It's very funny, and very warm-hearted and sweet, given the topic.

I know The Pitt is the premiere medical show on the scene at the moment, and it is an excellent show. They better not make me wait long for season 2! But as much as I love The Pitt, I am also completely taken by Doctor Odyssey (on Hulu). It's ER meets The Love Boat, while The Pitt is more ER meets 24.

Doctor Odyssey is so fun and exciting. It has a built in OT3! Fun guest stars, exciting action! I was holding my breath all the way through the shark episode haha. But it also isn't as serious as The Pitt is. Also the 3 leads are all so gorgeous. HEART EYES. I like all the weird medical stuff that pops up. Even the relationship drama is not too annoying.

If someone had told me a couple years ago I would become medical drama fan, I would have said never not ever. Goes to show me! Also let's blame George Clooney via Danny Ocean, because I decided to revisit ER after my Ocean's 11 renaissance and he's totally the reason why.

but trying to at least read Stephanie Jones' lawyers' Plaintiffs’ Memorandum of Law in Support of Their Motion to Dismiss Jennifer Abel’s Counterclaims and Certain Affirmative Defenses because of the whole Lively v. Baldoni saga, the PR firm fighting itself is by far the best part.

I cannot believe that Jennifer Abel, a genuine adult in her 30s (I think?), making low six figures in a cut-throat industry:
  1. When hired by Jones transferred her personal number, that she'd had since high school, to her new work phone.

  2. Had no other phone besides her work phone, and thus used her work phone for two-factor authentication for all her personal shit.

  3. Decided to steal her company's clients and sensitive documents (I actually can believe this part, see above about cut-throat industry).

  4. Used her work phone and work laptop to plot and carry out said theft.

  5. Used her work phone to text her buddies about how well said theft was going.

  6. Was a surprised Pikachu when her boss found out about all this and fired her.

  7. Was a surprised Pikachu when her boss took her work phone and work laptop.

  8. THEN SUED HER FORMER BOSS FOR UNFAIR TREATMENT.

The subsidiary of "Don't take notes on a criminal fucking conspiracy" should 100% be "ESPECIALLY ON A DEVICE YOU DON'T OWN!!!" holy shit.

2025 Hugo Award Finalist list is out.

Meh? None of the novels I nominated made it through. I've added three on Libby, but am deeply welmed by the choices. I'll track the rest down after I move.

Several of my novellas did, which is nice, but I was kinda "I guess?" about the whole list. It's (almost) all Tor again (cue someone angrily telling me that Tor and TorDotCom are not the same publisher! OMG! How dare people say they are!?)

I'll get the novelettes and short stories in the package.

I'm genuinely stoked that Rebecca Roanhorse's excellent trilogy is on the series list.

Some of the graphic novels look cool!

Uh... don't care about a lot of the other categories? I guess I'll see what's in the package (my vibe for a lot of this, as I was saying elsewhere).

Haven't seen any of the movies. The wrong Doctor Who episodes made it through! INJUSTICE! lol

Oh! Semiprozine is stacked (as it usually is).

I love that there's a poetry category this year.

Is Iron Widow YA? I keep getting told it's not. But a lot of the Lodestar books look cool, so I'm checking them out.

This came out a while ago, and I was like, "Do I really need to post every single thing Raye does?" before watching it ten million times and deciding, "Yes, yes I do."

It's Raye's song, and she and Lisa and Doja Cat just kill it, and I would read the fic. I don't want to break my youtube algorithm by searching for this, but does anyone know videos or essays that take apart songs (specifically this one) and explain why they work?

I'm not really posting here much beyond music lately, I guess. I have a handful of book reviews I should get to eventually. Probably. I read seven in March, and am currently reading a deeply mid cosy fantasy out of pure inertia, but the Network Effect audiobook just came in from the library!

Relatedly, I've really been enjoying being excited about the Murderbot show, and am trying to avoid anyone being negative about it. I'd appreciate cut tags? I'm staying out of comment sections other than my own (where everyone's been lovely). I don't mean to be a princess, but I'd just really like to hang onto this as my happy place. RL things have Not Been Great.

New Doctor Who in a couple days, which I'm looking forward to! (Speaking of Ncuti, no sign of him on the NT steaming site yet.)

I watch and enjoyed the first episode of season three of SurrealEstate (I'm not clear who the main cast is this season? Is it just Luke, Susan and Lomax? Are the others coming back full time? Phil seems to be gone gone). I feel like Luke's family drama being the arc plot every season might get old?

Otherwise, I've kinda been drifting.

A couple times I downloaded merge three games onto my phone, and hyper focused on them for hours until I had to delete them because I couldn't just play them a little bit. I'm sure there's science about how they're engineered to be addictive, but I was impressed either way.

Bird watching has kind of been my main thing lately. I try to go for a one or two kilometre walk every day to count all the birds I see. It's been really nice to get outside and reset my brain, and the migrations are happening so there are many birds. It'll probably stop once I move after Easter, but maybe I can get back into being churchy at that point.

Someday I might write again. I used to be good at that.

Another YouTube upload I discovered, and since it was only six episodes long, I gave it a try. After all, it has Stringer Bell and Jane Bennett hunting vampires. There was no way I didn't want to see that. And Susannah Harker was a revelation as Angie, who is so reserved and yet so destroyed, with the darkest backstory of anyone in the show. Having only seen her playing sweet Jane, it was so fascinating to watch.

Idris Elba as Vaughan was also great, but less surprising to me. There was also Philip Quast as the sardonic, scary as hell priest leading the team, who started out fairly background but whose role expanded at the end.

The first episode is somewhat dry, as it prefers to focus on Everyman Copper Michael (played by Jack Davenport, who I guess is famous from a bunch of stuff I've never seen), newly initiated into the vampire hunting life when his best friend Jack is turned. Between the show's avoidance of actual vampire discussion (the word is never used in any episode) and the requirement of setting up Michael's ordinary life before it all goes to hell, it's mostly just getting the pieces in position, but as of the second episode it turns into an extremely dark, gripping procedural with 90s conspiracy overtones.

It's also an unusual take on vampire warfare because the vampires rarely get their hands dirty, preferring to manipulate humans to do their work for them. They are organized and scientifically-minded, trying to preserve their increasingly self-destructive food supply. Meanwhile, their food supply objects to losing their status as the dominant predator of the world. It's a very cold premise, that keeps borrowing 90s headlines to lend a sense of realism to proceedings. There are definitely victims of the vampires, but they don't kill to feed, so the war is a vicious, silent struggle for dominance while regular people wander clueless, occasionally used as pawns or guinea pigs. Meanwhile, Michael looks on in horror, unsure if he's completely buying in or not, and toying with the hope of getting fired.

The writing throughout is quite subtle, and it rarely spells things out for the audience, which I appreciated a lot. Further thoughts under a cut. Read more... )

I've posted my first The Legend of Zelda prose story. (I'd previously posted TLOZ poems.) It's short and cozy. I'd originally intended it to be solely about swimming, as a point of mechanics-meet-lore, but it somehow picked up allusions to the common good and the nature of successful leadership along the way. Can't imagine what brought that to mind; must be exclusively how fair and earnest a servant-leader Zelda canonically is...

Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Title: "The Water in Which We Swim"
Rating: G, gen, no archive warnings apply
Length: 1,785 words
Summary: [Post-canon] On a family visit to Zora’s Domain, Zelda sees Hyrule through Yona’s eyes and realizes why Link never learned to swim underwater.

Many thanks to [personal profile] kirbyfest for beta-reading. Her help made the story clearer and richer.
