The moments just before the moon’s apex were the longest. The moonlight slid over his limbs and through his skin, and began to pull. His muscles stretched, tightened, cramped with a pressure that only anticipated the coming pain. He closed in on himself to make a smaller target, and failed. He couldn’t escape the moon’s reach. His heart thumped, each beat so slow he wondered if the next would arrive, hoped it wouldn’t. The seconds refused to click by, and the moonlight dug into him, grabbed his bones, shredded his mind, and told him the best was yet to come.
