Overall Thoughts

What the hell? When did I become a prolific writer? Do I ever write anything that isn't for a provided prompt? Why didn't someone tell me how easy this could be twenty years ago?

My best stories of the year

I think the ones I like the most are "Zero Point" and "Long Time Coming Home." They both presented a lot of challenges, most of them time related, and yet both far exceeded the expectations I had of the story going in.

My favorite story of the year

I wonder why "best" and "favorite" are different categories? My favorites stories are going to be the ones I think are the best. Or is this the category where I talk about something other people wrote? In that case, there's a lot of competition, but two of my favorite stories of the year are "as the moon waned to crescent we started to kiss" by cassiehayes (which was written based on one of my prompts) and "Young Hearts Spark Fire" by Zee. The former is an Allison/Scott/Stiles story that focuses on Allison and Stiles getting Scott through a particularly bad full moon, and the latter is an Allison/Danny/Scott story that focuses on Allison dealing with her mother's death. The characterization in both is wonderful!

Story of mine most unappreciated by the universe

All of them! They seem to do well in comments, yet never make rec lists.

Most fun story to write

"Long Time Coming Home" because Finstock.

Story with the sexiest moments

I didn't porn this year. "Killjoy" has a couple sexy moments, though.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story

Uh... "Lo Hicimos!"? I think the story that's going to make this entry every year will be the crack fic. I have to be in a specific mood to write crack, which means it doesn't happen very often.

Story that shifted my perceptions of the characters

None.

Hardest story to write:

It's a toss up between "Amazement," "And Hell Follows With Him," and "Fate of the World." I don't write much in Highlander, and I've never written a story that featured Joe, so that was one set of challenges. Tower Prep was an entirely new fandom for me to write in under the pressure of the clock, expectations for Yuletide, and seasonal brainfry. "Amazement" should have been easier except the requester and I matched on almost nothing except pairing, so trying to figure out how to navigate their request and write anything that came anywhere close to what they asked for was cause for much hair pulling.

Biggest disappointment:

None of my stories disappointed me this year. The biggest disappointment overall was the angst bingo round getting canceled on the last day when I was almost ready to post a blackout. However, the mod rescinded the next day and turned the cancellation into an extension, so that ended up working out better. I am disappointed at my failure to blackout in h/c bingo.

Biggest surprise:

"Hang on Tight and Don't Look Down." I started it for fountainxxpenny's birthday in September, got stalled at about 1200 words, and stuck the story on the back burner while I focused on other things. When I pulled it back out in November to finish, I ended up doing what I thought were three different restarts before I figured out that they were all parts of the same story. Once I got everything grafted together and edited and rewritten, the story ended up over 10,000 words. Since most of my stories don't cross 1500, and those that do are usually planned to go longer, hitting 10K by accident was really a shock.

Most unintentionally telling story:

This is obviously a question that someone else needs to answer on my behalf.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

More. Much, much more.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2012?

I wrote a My Secret Identity fic! Up until Christmas Eve of this year, I could have confidently predicted that such a feat would never be accomplished.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I wrote in several new fandoms: The Listener, My Secret Identity, H2O: Just Add Water, Tower Prep, and The Vampire Diaries, signed up for four different fests at the same time, finished a Big Bang, and became a bingo addict. That's a lot of writing risks.

I didn't learn, so much as confirm, that I love writing for other people. The answer to the perennial writer question of "where do you get your ideas" is "from what other people want."

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

No. I've already far exceeded all my own expectations, so I don't know what else to wish for.

I'd like to thank the academy...

[livejournal.com profile] fountainxxpenny, [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas, and
[livejournal.com profile] bethskink, without whom I probably wouldn't have finished anything this year.
