Shortcuts Gifts

This year for
hlh_shortcuts I received a lovely story from merriman. It's one of those scenes that I've always envisioned, but could never see clearly enough to write for myself--which makes it even more delightful of a gift.
Every Night a Party - 2862 words - Richie's heading north for a while. He meets a less nihilistic Gregor Powers on his way. There's not a whole lot to do in the middle of nowhere, so why not crash a party?
And I wrote The Stars Look Very Different Today for
killabeez - 2200 words - Anything can happen on the Winter Solstice, including the entire world changing.
From the moment the assignments came out, I knew what story I wanted to write: Rebecca's return, possibly through reincarnation. Rebecca was old--possibly the 2nd oldest behind Methos--and I have no doubt that she knew things other Immortals didn't. After all, she had the Methusulah stone, which she'd made a point of splitting up amongst her students. Obviously, she only gave up her head so easily because she knew it wouldn't be permanent. There was no way this idea could be anything less than a great story, right?
As it turned out, it was a story I couldn't write. As in, actually couldn't write. I had the beginning clearly in my head, but every time I tried to put it on the page, the words vanished. With the posting deadline creeping closer, I tried all the tricks I've used before to make a recalcitrant story work, and none of them succeeded. Finally, I had to admit defeat.
Fortunately, a plan B wasn't hard to generate. There's been a lot of talk about The Mandela Effect recently. Given how, erm, flexible Highlander continuity is, the connection seemed worth exploiting. The result is, of course, a story about Duncan remembering a version of reality that didn't occur--and that can't occur. This let me play with killa's requests for Found Family and to bring anyone back from the dead (without zombies).
Perhaps the next version of reality I find myself in will let me bring the other idea to fruition, too.
In other news:
The Richie Ryan Prompt Meme is OPEN!
Please come leave prompts. If you still have some fanfic-writing juice after the crush of Yuletide and Shortcuts, perhaps you can find a prompt to fill. All characters, pairings, ratings, lengths, and media permitted, as long as the final result features Richie.
